I was lucky to be in fandoms where the fic comms were well modded with consistent tags, etc. The only trouble with going back to them is if linking was allowed and the fic has since disappeared. Which usually it has since everyone deleted their LJs :( But a lot of comms required them to be posted there so a lot of the fic still lives.
