You couldn't have known. That's the crappy part - the average person just isn't prepared for something like that and why would they be? It's made me more aware that even though I'm not old or in poor health, I should make plans and write a will just so my family aren't caught off guard.

I really want to buy burial insurance, but I keep hearing that it's a rip-off. I might do it anyway though because I don't want my son stuck in the situation I was. I'm 51 and in fairly good health but I need to think about this. Unfortunately I don't have a big chunk of money lying around to make actual pre-need arrangements, though I keep hearing they're a rip-off too.

Honestly I'd just set aside the money with instructions on what it's for. Or just get life insurance. It depends on what arrangement you want, of course. I'm all for cremation in a cardboard box. I don't want people to waste money on a fancy coffin.

For religious reasons I'd rather not be cremated but I definitely don't want a fancy coffin or embalming (urgh) or anything like that. Right now I don't have the money to set aside, but I should work on it. I just want my son to be able to get to the money as quickly as possible.

NAYRT but my mom bought a plan through Smart Cremation that she ended up never using, because I looked it up after she paid $500 down out of $2000 and thought it looked like a scam/ripoff. When she passed away I paid less than $900 to have her cremated—she wanted to be composted, heh, but that’s not legal anywhere. I don’t know about prepaying for a burial plot or anything though.

My dad's cremation was more than that but not much more. (Also he wanted the cremains to be scattered so I had to pay extra for that.) He had a small burial policy that would have covered it but he never told me about it and it ended up taking forever to get the money from the insurance company.

I do want to buy a burial plot - not because I really care where I get buried but just so my son doesn't have to worry about it when I die. But it's very expensive so I can't do it right now.
