Sounds like the issue isn't their shipping preferences, but loudly declaring that same-sex pairings are pseudo-siblings or just good friends when they don't say that about opposite-sex pairings. Sounds passive-aggressive to boot.

I agree totally. I hate this kind of mentality. It's such backhanded homophobia.

Plus, to wade in with a different but related argument- I am an RPF shipper of M/M couples and I get a lot of stick. People (including the press) are always all 'oooh will they/won't they' and 'oooh let's speculate whether these people are fucking or not' with het couples ALL of the time. These two guys who are ALL over each other? Make one single comment about them being shippy and be forever vilified by 90% of fandom.

Gossip tabloids aren't exactly great standards to go by for morality.

+1, I was just about to say "Why can't I be like a tabloid?" is a shitty moral standard to hold.

Not just that, but tabloids often stop at "are they a couple" and don't go as far as "they totally are, and here's some porn created about them without their consent so that I can get off on it."

Ugh I know you didn’t mean it this way but the het RPF shippers in my fandom grossed me out. There wasn’t any “will they, won’t they” press coverage and both halves of the ship are married to other people, but when the woman had her first kid the RPF shippers were gushing about how the new baby had her coworker’s nose, and fans were always insulting the guy’s wife and calling her ugly and cruel and saying she was jealous of her hisband’s young, pretty onscreen love interest. I personally find that shit nasty no matter who the targeted “couple” is or what their component genders are.

AYRT: Oh. Wow. Yeah, that's pretty awful.
