Not OP but: it's dumb and bad. It adds nothing interesting in terms of depth to the series, and in fact makes the treatment of Nagini in the original series inexplicable and totally weird. Just make a different dark witch if you have to.

I don't object to JKR doing it at all, and casting a Korean lady instead of a South Asian one is a little silly but whatever. And I wouldn't say it's about "drawing a line" because I'm totally happy just ignoring it. But I don't think it's good, and I think the same is true for a lot of JKR's choices.

It's a funny old world. I'm like 100000000000 times more excited for this film now that I get to learn Nagini's backstory. Hell, I'm even more excited about Credence now that he has what appears to be someone who can meet him on his level.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-02 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I genuinely don't understand what's exciting about it

(Anonymous) 2018-10-02 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
You aren't a little curious? About her curse, how she came to have it, how it parallels to Credence's obscurus, how it speaks to the theme of having darkness inside us that we struggle to control, how easy it is to let that take over, when and why she decided to let it take over for good? Boy howdy, I am! What a fascinating character!

(Anonymous) 2018-10-02 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I can see how those would be interesting character notes, but I think they would all be much more interesting and less bad in a character who wasn't Nagini

(Anonymous) 2018-10-02 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess I don't understand what's "bad" about it being Nagini.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-02 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Because if Nagini is a character who can take human form and has the intelligence of a human being, why was there no sign of that in the original series? Nagini was never presented as being, like, full of seeeeecrets, at least from my point of view. So how do you reconcile those things? How does the narrative of struggling against the darkness wind up with Nagini seeming the way that she does in the original series? And most of all, isn't it super fucking weird that Nagini got milked by Wormtail?

(Anonymous) 2018-10-02 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Damn, this comment makes me even MORE excited! These are good questions, and I can't wait to find out the answers! Kudos, anon.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-02 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
If they adequately address Wormtail milking Nagini, I hope the movie wins an Oscar cause it'll deserve it

(Anonymous) 2018-10-03 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
i've seen people harp about this and i can't believe y'all are willing to out yourselves as morons like that

milking snakes means you take their venom. that is not a meaning rowling made up that is literally what is used to describe that. jesus.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-03 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
That's fine and makes perfect sense when the snake is not also a human woman

When the snake is also a human woman, it is a less adequate explanation

(Anonymous) 2018-10-02 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Nagini didn't have hands? That's why she got milked by Wormtail. And you know milked means for venom when you're talking about snakes, right? They ain't got nipples. It's not a sex thing.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-02 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, so we thought previously!

...obviously you never saw the concept art.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-03 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
Let's fix that right now.

Re: ...obviously you never saw the concept art.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-03 09:17 am (UTC)(link)
...what.

Snakes are reptiles, I just can't with people (men typically) putting boobs on non-mammalian creatures for some weird eroticism.

Yuck imagery on the pic.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-02 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
But I totally disagree. It's really interesting. Voldemort dehumanizing someone isn't really out of character, so I'm not sure how it makes the treatment "weird", just adds another layer to it.

Anyway, animal characters being actual humans absolutely does have a precedent so it feels completely on course for me. It's actually the only thing about the new films that is interesting to me, since I found the first film a little dull.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-02 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I just feel like the discrepancy between those ideas, and the actual original presentation of Nagini, is too vast for it to really make sense

(Anonymous) 2018-10-03 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Nagini literally cannibalized people for him. Neville triumphantly chipped her head off and we're supposed to cheer on him for doing so.
