Been there, anon. Sorry. I hate when my thoughts refuse to get off the merry go round of suck.

Also yesterday I was woken up at 3:00 am by a text from a crazy ex friend of my dead mom, asking if I’d go to the opera with her. I won’t even speak to her or be in the same room with her because she’s a creep who once gave me a ride to high school and told me “I’m naked under this bathrobe” as I was getting out of the car, has stuck her hands down my pants and goosed me, and just generally been disgusting since I hit puberty. She once told my mom “I’m (my name’s) real family.”

I wish I could block her number but she sometimes tries to “check up on me” in person and if she texts that she’s on her way to my house I make sure to leave the house or lock all my doors, windows, and gates and leave the lights off. I’ve told her “leave me alone, we’re not friends, you’re gross” to her face and she still occasionally decides we’re gonna be “friends.”

AYRT—I helped my mom get one against my dad and it was stressful as fuck and no help at all, until my dad dove through someone else’s window wearing body armor and carrying an illegally modified to be fully automatic rifle loaded with armor piercing rounds. Then>/i> the cops took him seriously and put him in jail.

Also she hasn’t come inside my yard or house since my mom died and it became my house. If she tries, then I’ll call the cops. Previous experience of law enforcement puts them firmly in “the cure is as bad as the disease” territory for me.

You would be shocked and disheartened at how hard it is to get one of those. I had an ex that was legit stalking me; I had all kinds of texts and letters and my firm refusals of all of them IN WRITING, I had cameras at my front and back doors that showed him prowling around the sidewalks at LEAST once weekly, I had people at my workplace who knew him and sequestered me away if they saw him and they were willing to vouch for me, but because he never got “violent” or actually violated my private space (i.e. he was on the sidewalk, not on my front porch), they couldn’t do anything.

It wasn’t until he actually broke into my house (and THANKFULLY there was a patrol car that was close enough to reroute to me that they showed up before he could make a break for it) that they finally “had enough to go on.”

And it’s STILL not foolproof. He breaks it every so often. He went to jail once, but mostly they just send someone out to shoo him off if he hasn’t gone away on his own.

Restraining orders aren’t useless, but they’re not really that helpful either.

Anon with the crazy 3am text stalker here and I’m so sorry you had to go through that. Yeah, restraining orders aren’t super easy to get and even once you’ve got one you still end up having to call the cops to get them to show up, the same way you would without the order, only maybe a bit faster if you’re lucky.
