Well, that's certainly a departure from conventional wisdom.

I'm getting the general impression that fandom wasn't crazy about it? IDK, I enjoyed it. Maybe because it worked very well as a standalone film as opposed to one installment in the franchise. The plot wasn't particularly complicated but it was well done, IMO.

I didn't see it myself, but yeah, it seemed like most of the reaction to it within fandom was to use it as ammunition in the never ending wars about TLJ

(Anonymous) 2018-10-05 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you mind elaborating on ammunition, like... in what sense? I'm not a huge diehard Star Wars fan, if you can't tell. I've watched the new SW films but I'm not emotionally invested. Some were fun, some weren't. I really don't get the insane fuss, to be honest.

Not, anon. But some of the fans who hated TLJ decided that they just hated the new movies altogether and that if they boycotted Solo, the people in charge would all be fired.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-05 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha, wow. That's pretty special thinking right there.

Well, that's that small section of the SW fandom for you. They are a bunch of white dudes that are unhappy with change and they want to ruin things for everyone else.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-06 08:09 am (UTC)(link)
The boycott was stupid, but they weren't all white and they weren't all dudes, not from the youtubes I've seen about them.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-05 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Star Wars fandom is something else, that's for sure.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-06 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
And don't forget the people who blamed Solo's box office bomb on the general public totes hating TLJ! Something something about people disliked TLJ so much they decided to not watch any new SW movies or something. Idek.

I'm with OP in not particularly liking Han as a character, but I'm still looking forward to watching this movie for the first time soon!

(Anonymous) 2018-10-06 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
I agree, it was a fun film that did what it wanted to do and I enjoyed it.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-07 08:37 am (UTC)(link)
i think it suffered from its release date a great deal too. It came out a little too soon after Jedi and enough people just weren't in the mood for another Star Wars movie that dropped so soon after. It was also came out not too many weeks after Infinity War. I think the timing probably isn't the only reason, but it certainly didn't help it either.

I wouldn't go this far, but it was better than I was expecting after all the criticism and behind-the-scenes drama.

That said, I liked TLJ for the most part too, so maybe I should just remember to never listen to the SW fandom.

SA - I liked it even better when I pretended it was just some random guy in the universe, and not Han Solo. I actually like the actor fine (he was fantastic in Hail, Caesar!) but Han Solo, he was not.

Glad to hear that! I haven't watched it yet, so - that makes me more interested. :D

Totally agree, OP! Went in with low expectations and was a fan within ten minutes. But I also didn't hate TLJ. For the first time in my lifetime I have no idea where the Canon is headed and that's exciting. I came after all the huge revelations in the original trilogy so they were part of the universe by the first time I saw it. And the prequels gave us nothing interesting and new. I'm excited to see how it all ends.

I enjoyed it. Really like the him and Chewbacca bits.

The first ~30 minutes are kind of a mess that I have a lot of issues with, but overall I enjoyed it too, OP.
