Some of us just happen to think porn should be better.

I don't think it's hot when the uke looks like he's ten and is half the size of the seme and is crying and saying "no no no" while the seme rapes him, and yet that's what most of the typical yaoi is. If porn fails to get you off, porn has failed.

And it's not even just porn because usually it comes with a story, and unfortunately a lot of people do look to yaoi for examples of romance, and eventually start thinking about shit like Okane Ga Nai as romantic...

Good for you, I'm glad you don't think it's hot. Other people do. Why is what you think is hot inherently better than what other people think is hot?

This isn't to say I don't have a lot of problems with typical yaoi, or that I personally like it (I don't), but "neener neener, my wank material is better than yours" is just so obnoxiously childish. Then, in this particular case, it's also topped off with a healthy amount of "THIS IS WHAT REAL MEN ARE, REAL MEN HAVE MUSCLES, GRR" bullshit.

If I believed it was just for wank and nothing else, I'd... still hate it, but I'd hate it on the level of other fetishes I'd find repellent, i.e. at a distance, ignoring it while I occupy myself with what does turn me on. As is best.

But it's not just a fetish, it's a character issue, and it's not just porn, it's part of a genre. I enjoy my shameful weirdass fetishes, but at the end of the day they have nothing to do with the characters involved and I know it's a fantasy. It's entirely possible - possible, hell, it happens that some people enjoy their seme/uke fantasies and come away with an idea that this is how gay characters ought to be: those two cardboard cutout porn templates. You see it all the time in fandom, people wondering who the "uke" should be and gleefully throwing characters out the window to paste their faces onto the stereotypes.

I think people who find it hot have bad taste, but if it stopped at finding it hot I wouldn't care. But it doesn't and that's why people make a big deal about it. It's like if you really liked Western porn and watched a lot of it and then in all your stories, if your female character ordered pizza you'd write that she paid for it with sex because that's how it goes, porn told you so.

I understand what you're saying and I agree with the vast majority of it, but I don't see how it justifies saying "Bara men are just so much better than those whiny little ukes."

... There, I more or less got nothin', since I don't read bara. My guess/hope would be that along with the different aesthetic there's also different storytelling/character choices and the men presented act more like actual people, and that's part of what appeals to the OP? I fully admit this is coming out of my ass though.

Alternatively it's just swinging really far in the other direction and, by contrast to what she liked before and doesn't now, it looks A+++ and that's why the "Bara is better than yaoi!" attitude. idk.

I didn't intend my secret to come across as 'OMG BARA IS SOOOO BETTER THAN YAOI ALL YAOI FANS ARE RETARDED'.
I feel bad that people interpreted it that way.

I have a lot of friends who like yaoi with seme/uke whatever, and I respect what they like.

Bara and kinikku (not necessarily the omg gigantic muscles tiny heads) appeals to me not only for the manliness, but also for the attitude and appeal the characters exude. They're much more likeable, and that's why I love drawing them.
