To be fair, people usually only ever comment that when someone is trying to get removed for being a repeat.

TBH people need to chill out about people thinking that something's a repeat

I agree.

secret maker again

Eh, I'll try. I just don't like how people are so eager to nuke "repeats" based on just an unsubstantiated feeling. Case has been careful not to failbar comments based on an anonymous comment with no proof link, but it's still annoying to me personally that I'll make a secret and someone reports it. Not sure? Maybe don't report it then, it's not that important.

I don't mind if people wonder or ask if it's a repeat, but I hate it when people declare it as fact with nothing to back it up.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-07 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
Same. I've also had to correct several people who were "pretty sure" or "almost positive" a secret was a repeat.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-06 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I've seen the OP of the comment come around sometimes and reply to commenters or find it nice that someone made a secret for them

(Anonymous) 2018-10-06 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I don't see what's wrong with that. It was an honor to see my GC secret made into an official secret.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-06 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
This is actually me today, my secret is #6 and I love that the anons make them when I (and anyone else) can't be arsed to do it.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-06 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the threads are shorter because we've already hashed it out in GC.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-06 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I can only speak for the secrets I make, but... nope. Most of the time, there is little to no discussion about the comments I use for secrets.

Secret maker here...

I'm sorry if it takes away some of the "magic" for you, but...

1) There are people who don't realize this is a thing and report secrets because they "sound familiar". They don't bother to actually look and see if it's a repeat, they just rush off and report it on a hunch.

2) Very, very frequently (more often than not, in fact) the person who made the original comment notices the secret, appears in the comments AND engages in discussion and they're usually tickled that their comment is now a secret.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-07 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't even realize people made secrets based on comments of others until a few days ago (I don't pay that much attention to the comments, I guess), and I'm kind of shocked about it, actually. I feel it's a bit like they're trying to take credit for or get attention from someone else's experience (it also seems like a huge waste of time but I can't judge on that when it comes to fandom). I mean, to each their own, I guess, but I would be offended if I saw someone try to pass off one of my comments as their secret.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-07 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, okay. You seem to be reading a whole lot into this, so I'll just explain and see if that helps.

This community is not as active as it once was - mild understatement. Fewer secrets are being submitted overall and (I suspect) by a smaller group of people. So I and other people began scouting the general comments for the odd comment that we think would make a cool secret and submitting it. Quite frequently there are threads specifically for this purpose, i.e. "Fandom secrets you're too lazy to make" threads.

Nobody is trying to "take credit" for someone else's experience. How would that even work since all secrets are posted anonymously? Nobody is doing it for attention... like, what attention would that be? The fame and fortune that rains down upon your head for being an anonymous rando who submits secrets to a smallish community on dreamwidth? I'm sorry to get a little snarky but both those ideas sound paranoid and irrational to me.

As for being a waste of time... well, it's not your time that's being wasted, right? I don't regard it as a waste of time because it provides more secrets to this community and keeps it active. Most people are psyched about seeing their comment made into a secret and they benefit from the discussion that's generated from it, because it has higher visibility than a comment in the GC.

If the idea of someone quoting your publicly posted words offends you, then simply note that in your comment and I for one will honor it. I look forward to seeing what utterances are too sacred to be repeated by anyone else, LOL.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-07 02:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, certainly someone in this scenario is reading a whole lot into statements posted to this site, that's for sure.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-07 08:28 am (UTC)(link)
how can you take credit for something you submit anonymously?

(Anonymous) 2018-10-07 02:39 pm (UTC)(link)
You become the perceived "OP"? Responses to the secret are directed to "you"? It is possible to receive (different forms of) credit and attention without revealing your identity.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-07 03:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think that people are confused and think that they actually wrote the secret, though

(Anonymous) 2018-10-08 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
Seeing as how I just said I had no idea that people took other people's comments and made secrets out of them...
