There is one author I love who does a lot of Gen Team Free Will fic. They capture the deep, familial love unrelated people can have for each other.

This is so important. I ship Dean/Cas as hard as I can for a show I don't watch anymore. But there are other kinds of love besides romantic. Friendships can develop an intense, entirely unromantic love. Some friends are just that close. And at this point, Cas probably sees the Winchesters as his family. And since he started out knowing Dean first, it makes sense that their friendship would be strongest.

I ship Destiel both romantically and platonically, so I can definitely see Cas loving Dean enough to do all the things he's done without having any romantic feelings for him.

Idk I ship it but I don't think it's particularity unusual to depict two friends doing The Most for each other in dire circumstances? It's a pretty staple fictional trope tbh.

For sure. Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin cone to mind.

On the one hand I'm with everyone else (deep soul churning affection even in platonic form is the good shit and can be a very powerful force in of itself), but I also kind of get what you mean? But in my mind I think it's because poor Cas can especially feel tacked on as an afterthought in shipping fics that aren't about him, but only in the way that all minor characters in shipping fic are at risk of, as set pieces to the main couple.

It's also possible that he loves Dean romantically but has decided, for whatever reason (probably related to the fact he's a millennia-old Angel and Dean is mortal) not to pursue a romantic relationship. You can be in love with someone and not pursue a relationship with them. It's kind of a wonderful thing, actually.

Best friends forever.

Well, there are a few reasons why he'd be really attached to Dean.

Cas rescued Dean from Perdition, so there's a responsible sort of caring.
Dean seemed to be the first human Cas really related to, so there's a connected kind of caring.
The angels weren't heavy into showing feelings, but Dean did show his and he showed it for Cas, so there's a reciprocal kind of caring.
Dean taught Cas things he'd never known before, so there's a mentor/mentee kind of caring.
At some point, they seem to see each other as family, so there's a familial sort of caring.
Stacking all of that up, whether or not there's any romantic caring, Dean is going to mean a lot to Cas.

Since meeting Dean, Castiel has basically modeled his behavior after the brothers (Dean more than Sam).

Uh, I see it like Cas has sort of imprinted on Dean- But I don't see a ship there and never have.

There's absolutely no need to apologize for making a secret from any fandom no matter how "old". Especially when this series is still ongoing with a large, active following.

They've kind of moved into the "like brothers" and "Cas is FAMILY" thing on the show, but usually people (and fictional characters) don't literally move heaven and earth for their pals the way Castiel does for Dean.

I used to be glad Castiel wasn't female, because the show would just put Cas and Dean together and kill Cas off for manpain reasons, but they already did that, so... *shrug*
