Clearly "fuck you" is the proper strategy.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-06 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
That's certainly what the empirical evidence would seem to suggest.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-06 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Cool, keep it up!

In all seriousness, if the secret to electoral success is to be nicer, how on earth do you explain the complete and total success of the Republican Party?

(Anonymous) 2018-10-06 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I think Trump got elected in swing states by people (even some moderates and former Obama supporters) who were really angry about being mocked on the basis of their race and gender, and by being treated as insignificant and stupid by the media and the Democratic candidate. Can you imagine how angry a person must have been to vote for someone whose positions they didn't agree with at all? Someone they even found to be a despicable human? Wow!

Now you can take issue with that all you want, but the thing is - you had these voters in your pocket. And you could have them back. It's really sad to read the comments in this thread and realize, it's just not going to happen because the far left is not going to stop sinking to Trump's level.

So, from a tactical point of view, I think you've certainly pinpointed the fact that independent voters in Midwestern swing states broke from Trump, and that this was the immediate, proximal cause of his win.

But that doesn't mean that I have any sympathy or respect for those people or their choices. Their choice was certainly wrong and they were bad people for choosing that way. And from a strictly tactical point of view, I don't think it necessarily follows that being nicer to those people is the only way to win. I think, in general, standing up for what you believe and getting the people who are your base to turn out for you is probably a more effective strategy. It certainly worked for Republicans.

SA

Also, I think there were a lot of reasons for swing voters breaking the way that they did beyond just !!!!!!DEPLORABLES~~~~~

How the fuck is the far left sinking to the Chump’s level? Mocking straight white men =/=cutting their SNAP benefits, keeping their kids in cages, trying to kick them out of the military and the country, take away their retirement savings and healthcare... like, fuck, he also mocks everyone who’s not rooting for him, but even if the US far left had any political power—even Sanders wouldn’t be far left in pretty much any other democratic country—it wouldn’t be nearly as much of a selfish shitshow as the Chump administration.

This.

100 % don't agree. The left is worse in their self righteous martyrdom. And I'm quite liberal. The hatred and venom on both sides is irrational and tragic.

I'm sorry that my being understandably angry that Donald Dump and his supporters wanting me dead for daring to be born a woman, daring to be disabled and daring to be gay has made me hostile.

Wait.

No I'm not, you fucking kowtowing shitlord who doesn't want to admit you care more about yourself and your hurt feewings than the fact you literally associate with racists, homophobes and literal Nazis by proxy of supporting Dump.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-07 02:00 pm (UTC)(link)
How is the left like the Chump anon here—ayrt is being ridiculous and if they’re not trolling they’ve got zero empathy, just like him.

“Self-righteous martyrdom”—what does the average conservative think is worthy of self-righteousness? Shaming and hurting people whose parents brought them here as kids illegally, people who are attracted to their same sex/gender, women who have sex outside of marriage. What does the left think is worthy of self-righteousness? Condemning putting small children in cages and adopting them to white Christian families while deporting their parents, condemning the refusal to give LGBT+ people medical care because someone’s religious beliefs say it’s better for a gay person (or a person seeking abortion) to die than violate beliefs they don’t themselves share?

The right is just as self righteous but their righteousness harms people. The left may be sanctimonious, but for the most part they don’t care what individuals do outside of trying to ban persecuting other people or treating them as lesser for circumstances they can’t help, and prevent further degradation and pollution of natural resources because harming the environment harms everything that lives in it including us.

The left generally wants to prevent people from harming each other and the environment. The right wants to be able to hurt people for not following a very narrow, rigid kind of Christianity and is mostly indifferent or actively hostile to preserving the environment if it might reduce profits.

Why is hatred and venom worse than actually hurting people (while indulging in plenty of hatred and venom) like the right is doing? What is the left advocating that harms people in the same ways the Chump administration has? Insults=/=taking away food, residency, children, positions in the military, etc. Especially when the right is perfectly comfortable insulting and degrading anyone who doesn’t march in lockstep with them. Verbal harassment and mockery alone is better than verbal harassment and mockery coupled with hateful actions. If you can’t see that, I can’t imagine you’ve ever experienced anything worse than mockery. Which, sorry, but mockery happens to everyone and harassment to a depressing number of peope the right loathes.
