Does anyone else feel bad when someone puts in a lot of....'think' work for a custom item...

But you don't but it? I have been looking into getting some custom shelves made. And this person has been dialing into what I want. Asking a ton of questions and stuff to figure out how much what I want would cost. I will feel bad if when he is done, this price quote is too expensive because he did so much work talking to me and such.

No. Unless he's brand new to this, he knows very well that the time he invests doesn't automatically equal a sale. In fact I'd hazard a guess that most of the time it doesn't because people tend to underestimate how expensive custom jobs are and they're horrified by how high the estimate is. They might not love it when this happens, but I guarantee you they're used to it.
