I'm thinking most of Disney's IPs which are a retelling of existing folklore. But, in my personal opinion, after something hits a certain profit margin, it should become public domain.

Well, just being based on a previous work doesn't preclude you having copyright on something. It's still true because a ton of Disney IP is old as hell anyway, though.

But, in my personal opinion, after something hits a certain profit margin, it should become public domain.

A deeply interesting idea.

But Disney doesn't own the folklore. They only own THEIR interpretations.

Fanworks are also re-interpretations though.

There's re-interpretations that amount to new intellectual property, and there's re-interpretations that make use of existing intellectual property in a new way, and there's a difference between those things,, I think.

Eh, it's a spectrum for sure, I'm just a lot more lenient.

Yeah I guess a lot of it depends on how AU the fic is, probably.
