All the Star Wars movies are great. All of them. And TLJ is in my top five favorites (probably slot 4 after ROTJ, ESB, and Rogue One).

I really liked TLJ too and don't get the backlash (outside of the disappointed Finn/Rey shippers, that is).

Agreed

I've never been a SW fan like... ever, but I enjoyed 2 of the three new ones sort of. They were decent background noise movies. I watched Solo yesterday though and was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. And maybe LandoHan forever.

sorry but there is nothing good whatsoever about phantom menace

Some of the design work is really cool, especially on Naboo.

It's a shame about the story and acting and dialogue and characters, really.

I think their is. I enjoyed it a lot.

Thirteen year old me who very much liked younger Ewan McGregor in that movie begs to differ.

nope. Ewan McGregor and Liam Neeson are good.

the costumes are good.

the music is good.

the plot makes decent linear sense, podrace notwithstanding.

like, I feel like most of the TPM hate has always been, from 1999 on, "this isn't A New Hope I don't like change and Jar Jar sucks." but TPM hate from 1999 on is why I'm no longer a Star Wars fan. Thanks fanboys you ruined it.

Fanboys go too far but there are serious problems with the movie beyond just Jar-Jar. The plot makes linear sense, yeah, but that doesn't mean that it works as a plot in terms of character motivations and narrative. And in fact, it's pretty deeply flawed on that level. Fundamentally, it's trying to tell two different stories - the story of Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan/Amidala/the Trade Federation, and the story of Anakin. It doesn't do a good job of joining them together at all - it basically just chunks the Anakin storyline into the whole middle third of the film - and it also doesn't do a very good job with the Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan/Amidala storyline in terms of giving us coherent, compelling reasons to care about the story, or motivations for the characters. The Trade Federation are terrible villains, as well.

I do think it gets a bad rap for a lot of things that aren't really problems. But I also think that there are reasons that people hate it besides being idiot fanboys.

And then when TFA was A New Hope, people got whiny about that, too.

I agree! Of course there are some I prefer over others, but there are none I outright hate. On the other hand, there is something I love in all of them. Yes, even the prequels. I think the writing is mostly terrible, but the ideas are mostly good (please read the novelization of RoTS cause it's AWESOME) and I loved their looks. Sure, I'd change a lot of stuff in them if I could... but I'm still able to watch them just fine.

The ROTS novelization is amazing. My second favorite Star Wars book.

Which one is your favorite?

You can absolutely enjoy and like them all.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-07 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
And I know you're being subjective and it's your opinion, but I find it very difficult to believe that you wholeheartedly think that every single one was great. I think you could make the argument that all of them are not bad. And that all of them had good parts to them. I just can't think of one series, book or movie or TV show, that I think every installment was great, no matter how wonderful I think the series is overall.

TLJ is my favorite movie ever. No regrets.

This is probably an unpopular opinion in and of itself, but I've never even seen a single 'Star Wars' film, original or otherwise.
All in all, I've always considered them overrated, regardless of what number they are, and I probably always will...

So in an outsiders perspective, I don't see much of a difference in any of them- if you liked the first, the most recent should be just as compelling.
