Re: Unpopular opinions
(Anonymous) 2018-10-08 02:31 pm (UTC)(link)It's nice to see someone represented as who they are, rather than the forced stereotypes or obnoxious stand-ins, just to publicize some inclusion.
And for all those who disagree, indie can be found. Quite easily too, as the internet, and film, do acknowledge those who create individually, and the ones building on the platform they've already created. You don't need to spend hundreds of dollars, even a comment of thanks is enough sometimes. You just need to search.
I'll use Deadpool 2 as an example in this. I loved both movies, but Negasonic's relationship in the second sent off so many signals in this regard. There was no purpose to it, no development. Just a couple of 'lesbians' standing, at most, shoulder to shoulder- just to say- 'Hey look at how risqué were being by making this almost main character gay!'... Yukio's only lines were to greet Wade, which would have been fine comedically if she actually had a purpose aside from that. Juggernaut could have been defeated without her, the same goes for Cable's device being recharged.
Ryan has said time and time again that he'd do these characters right, that Wade is Pansexual, and so on and so forth. I believe him. What I don't believe is the medias ability to represent that.
I use this example because even in the 'big' pictures, the intent is always going to be changed in order to cause the most fanfare.
With indie, it has less of a chance to become corrupted. A story can unfold as it wishes to, and can become something worthwhile to see, while staying true to what aspects it holds.
