Also, is it even legal for them to enter my apartment without letting me know beforehand?

Sort of depends on what they were checking and what your rental agreement is like. There are things like emergency equipment, possible gas leaks, and things that could damage someone else's property that I believe they can check without notice. Also, in your rental agreement, there should be some language about permission to enter.

Maintenance might have a list of who has pets, but also might not and as long as they aren't attacked, might not mention it at all, especially if they were checking lots of apartments.
