While maintenance people may get told who has pets so there aren't any surprises, do they even have access to information on who has or hasn't paid the deposit/rent? Would they even know if you were breaking a rule? Would they bother saying anything?

If it comes up at all, just say it was a very sudden emergency and you didn't have time to tell your landlord beforehand. Maybe go on to say you thought it would only be one night or something and it has been going on longer than you expected, in case they ask why you didn't say anything the next day or whatever.
