I'm sensitive of age differences in media if only because it tends to be a reflection of how little presence women above a certain age get on screen (that graph of leading men v leading ladies) and that carries with it some less fun connotations. But also, like, I see teenagers dish out piping hot takes about how viscerally gross the age difference is between two literal adults with 14 years between them and I'm like. You've got the spirit but please take a breath and go outside and come back in a few years with some perspective.

Did they just happen to meet once or twice when one was a child, and then later on reunited in adulthood as equals? Fine by me.

And if they're shrieking pedo because they can't think of their favorite character as an actual adult, then yes, a little STFU is in order.

OP here. I don't want to out myself because it's a smallish fandom. Not that I haven't seen it in other fandoms. In this one it's the third thing you said. Canon has a period of time where he is underage, but it also shows him as an adult with a serious career. That's the age I ship him with another character who is older by an unclear number of years but my best guess would be 4 or 5? There's not a huge age gap.

There's a group in the fandom who sort of dominate all discussions who refer to him as "my son" and "cinnamon roll" and they're awful to anyone who disagrees with how they see him.

My favorite switcheroo on this type of pearl clutching is when there's a large age difference, but both are actually legally and functionally adults...as in even the younger person in the ship supports themselves and pays their own bills.

Somehow, don't ask me how, the whole "pedo" thing gets thrown around (or even better, "they're like father and daughter!"), but it's so obvious that it's all part of painting a hated 'ship as "evil" that it's ridiculous.

Then there's the variant: the older partner always gets older as the series continuous, but somehow the younger partner *never ages* and is the same age they were in the first episode.

In all seriousness, there are legit ships that make me cringe because there are some elements that do make it squicky (at least to me), but sweeping up all ships that have a 10+ year age difference when the characters met when they were already adults and there's no power imbalance between the two into the pedo bucket is insane.

This. I have a ship that I like who are about 12 years apart in age, but they're both adults. But yet people will claim that's it's pedophilia. I just shake my head and block/mute them and their vocal supporters.
