AYRT—okay I would love an alpaca collection but that’s hilarious until I think what must’ve happened to them when the bottom fell out of the market.

It wasn't as bad as you think, actually! Some were abandoned and had to be rescued, but in general more experienced alpaca farmers snapped up the animals for bargain basement prices. They're also part of the huge expansion of free-range chicken eggs - the alpacas guard the chickens out in the fields. Definitely not as bad as the ending of some other animal husbandry crazes (e.g. emus in the US, camels in Australia).
