And the stereotypical image of VARIOUS island cultures is "ooooh look at the UNCIVILIZED non-white cannibals, not like us civilized Christian white folk."

Missing the point.

It's a gross stereotype of island cultures that's got a long, long history. (seriously, you can find texts calling the stereotype out in the 70s about how it was treated as historical fact with little to back it up for as many places as supposedly practiced it, according to the white people who reported it.)

if they never practiced it, I have been misinformed and will acknowledge that I made a mistake in believing a stereotype.

I'm sure some did (just as some white people do), but the difference is the Generic Island Natives tend to be uncivilized and a number of them are cannibals (see: PotC had a big example of this exact stereotype). It's like if a predominantly non-white country ONLY showed Westerners as crazy slave-owners who practically worship guns (literally) and kill babies with them.

That doesn't make it okay to invoke, especially media-wise where some sensitivity in the wake of wrongdoings for hundreds of years have been dominant in stories and even, in some cases, academia.
