133. Except that Jordan wasn't trying to save the universe; he was only trying to save Molly. Saving the universe was just tacked on to what his true goal was. And yes, Molly was upset, but only because her one big dream (to bring her mother back) was never going to happen and she was basically told she had to give up her life as she knew it to be some omnipotent being that's going to be stranded in the middle of nowhere. Also, she does the best she can, but Molly is not a fighter nor has she ever been. She is a pilot. The ones with actual military training are Aikka and Jordan. Big surprise that they step up to the plate when they need to.

It amounts to the same thing. He got to be the hero, while she was completely passive. I don't expect her to be some badass fighter, but I do expect her to show some of the backbone she's displayed in the series before that episode. Just, I dunno, stand up defiantly and say that she makes her own choices and won't be controlled by anyone. Just SOMETHING to show that she wasn't gonna just give up and lie there crying.

The fact that she accepted becoming the Avatar is showing that she didn't give up. She screwed up MAJORLY when she was originally supposed to make the change, and she knew it. Deciding that she still had to go through with it, especially after Don Wei made it clear to her that he wanted them to reconcile, was a huge deal when it comes to her personality.

Here's Don Wei offering her the one thing she's wanted from the beginning: her family, even if it's slightly broken. And then there's this Avatar deal, which basically means that last shred of her dream is going to be ripped away from her. And yet, she still makes the commitment to become the next Avatar, because it's the right thing to do. Even though it means sacrificing the family she's been fighting to have since the first episode.

Sure, she doesn't go and start shooting like Annie Oakley at Canaletto at the end, but that's no surprise. Molly's strength was always her mental and emotional toughness, not her physical. It's the fact that she even went that far, that she was willing to give up her very precious dream and do something completely selfless, that keeps Molly's worth alive and well at the end.

For some reason I've always had a thing for stories where someone trying to save just one person ends up saving the whole damn world. Heh.

I kinda like it myself. Something about selfish sacrifice that winds up becoming selfless in the long run of it that makes me smile. However, that doesn't mean I wasn't all, "OMG JORDAN, fdjafaljkda;jfkdla;kdls?!?!?!?!!!" at the end. Because, oh, was I ever. Still, it was kinda nice, in a totally depressing way. If that makes any sense. ^_^;
