Basically, at the near end of the series the main female, Molly, is told that everything she believed about the race and what she could get out of it (to bring her mother back from the dead) was not only a lie, but that she's been chosen to sacrifice her life in order to become a god of some sorts in the far corner of the universe. Reasonably, this is a bit upsetting. Still, she tries to go through with it, because it's the right thing to do. But the very end is an actual battle scene, and Molly is not ever portrayed as a physical fighter. She's mentally tough, and a great pilot, but we are never shown throughout the whole series that she can hold her own in a fight. So, the two main males, both of whom are established as people with military training, are the ones to actually duke it out with the bad guy.

Somehow, this rather realistic scenario does not sit well with the OP. While I agree the ending was depressing, it wasn't because, "OMG, where did her kickass go?!" Molly was still Molly at the end. It just would've been totally unbelievable if she suddenly shouted, "OH HAI GUYZ, I CAN FIGHTS TOO."

I think it's one of those endings that people got more upset over because it didn't end the way they wanted it to. Either because Molly didn't somehow come out with super kung-fu action, or because a main cast member had to be sacrificed in order for the universe to be saved. Even though there was no way around the sacrifice. But, I think that's why I liked it. Because they didn't cheapen the ending by a loophole. There was no "Get Out of Sacrifice Free" card. And when it happened, it was upsetting. But in a good way, because you realized that the show made you really care about its characters and their welfare. And that's what a good show does.

It's not that. It's not that I expected her to suddenly become a butt-kicking ninja in the last episode. It's the fact that in that very last scene, she didn't even TRY to take control. She's just been told that she's been manipulated her entire life to get to this point. This is supposed to be the cue for our hero to be shocked/depressed, and then to defiantly announce that she won't be anyone's pawn, she chooses her own destiny, whatever. Instead she just sat there and CRIED. Until Jordan SAVED HER. And that's THE END OF THE SERIES. In the final confrontation, she just gives up and has to be rescued.

It's not that I expect her to not need anyone's help. But I expect her to not be completely passive.

You mean in that split second that Canaletto pulled out his mind/body whammy on her, and she couldn't move? ...Yeah, I can see where she'd be able to do something. Except not. Mind you, she did look like she was actually going to say something to birdman, but then he whipped out the ol' powers on her. Pay attention to the fact that it looked like he actually put her under a trance of some sort. She only seemed to wake up when Jordan called her name. And Molly was, bottom line, human. Again, I think you were asking for too much. Also, finding out that your mother's death wasn't an accident, but actually a murder done because of you? Yeah, I'd be pretty busted up myself. There'd be a lot more tears than what Molly showed.

I think you seem to be missing the point of my complaint. I'm not bashing Molly as a character for factors beyond her control, I'm criticizing the writers for putting her in such a position. If the final scene had Canaletto, say, randomly pulling a gun on her and shooting her, I wouldn't expect her to be magically impervious to bullet wounds, but I would say it's pretty damn stupid for the writers to make their main character be injured and unresponsive during the big climactic scene. Maybe in a different series, with gritty realistic themes like the arbitrariness of life or whatever; but this is a kid's cartoon with themes of love and friendship and perseverance and overcoming the odds. Why would you neuter your main character during the climax, the most important part of the story?
