101. You should care enough to vote, period. There's just no excuse for this.

104. Aw. Well, some people are just idiots. Maybe try to get your friends into a British fandom? Then they'd have reason to learn more just so they could follow along.

109. Totally gorgeous. Love her eyes, hair, smile, everything.

131. Whatever gets you through. And I'm sorry you went through that. That's one of my worst nightmares.

140. Well, except for Carlisle (in love with Carlisle - why can't the books be about HIM, dammit? think the books would suck less that way?), Edward IS the best character in the books to me.

His, "I LOVE THE GIRL BUT I WANT TO EAT HER. WOE." angst is incredibly lulzy and entertaining. It trumps Bella's angst the way my cats play with flies.

Can't say I want to be Bella. Might sort of want to be Edward if I got MIND-READING POWARS, but the bloodlust might be a pain. No, mainly, I'd like to be Carlisle. Because I want to be a doctor too, and his point about his increased sense of smell being diagnostically helpful especially snagged my attention.

154. This is pretty awesome.

161. TRUFAX. Although I have to wonder what fandom you're in that the whining is enough to push you out.

165. I know this can hardly be a comfort, but it was just a dream, yeah? Just try your best to forget it entirely.

182. I seriously doubt that. Especially if you're female. If he's straight, why doesn't he ever have chemistry with women? Not trying to be cruel, but yeah, find something else to believe.

Maybe they care too much to vote.

WHAT

Re: 101

[identity profile] cdaae.livejournal.com 2008-08-19 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
See for instance, this comment (http://community.livejournal.com/fandomsecrets/189879.html?thread=75884215#t75884215), by someone who doesn't identify themselves as the OP but may well be.

There's a long and respectable philosophical history behind not voting, which it's not particularly surprising isn't taught along with all the reasons our system is so great and wonderful in spite of so many people agreeing the results are always crap.

Re: 101

[identity profile] xanykaos.livejournal.com 2008-08-19 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh. You make a good point. I don't think I'm voting this year, partially because I don't know if I can/want to bother with getting an absentee ballot (since last time it worked so well...got it the day it was due in), but partially because I can't decide whether I'd like to have a man who was a POW for awhile sitting on the button, or a man who smiles just enough that he sets me on edge every time I see a picture of him.*

And now I feel better about that. We're always told it's voter apathy, and the whole "Rock the Vote!" thing, but in the end...it's not apathy if you can't pick either in good conscience, is it?

Sorry, babbling, it's just that you helped me come to a bit of a realisation.

...and I always think of Futurama at times like this. Oh politics... I can't stand anything about MM, but if Optimus Prime ran for President...

*I have better reasons than this.

Re: 101

[identity profile] cdaae.livejournal.com 2008-08-19 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I don't think it's apathy at all, at least when it's a decision you've thought about. And for a lot of people who haven't really thought about it, it's just that they've become so sick of seeing people who live in an entirely different world talk about the same old bullshit that has nothing to do with their everyday lives, the apathy comes from a disconnect which is the fault of the politicians and the political system, not the people they don't reach.

I always struggle with the same thing come election time because we're so conditioned to feel that it's the right thing to do, and it's better to pick the least awful of the choices than risk letting the most awful get in. But to grossly exaggerate things in order to make a valid point, if I were given the choice of voting to be ruled by Hitler, Stalin, or Mao, I think I'd be forgiven for opting out of voting at all.

I do vote in local elections though, because they're your at a level where you have some hope of actually changing things in your local community. I think the US is stronger in that area than the UK, though.

Assuming that the OP of 101 is female... women who don't vote are spitting in the face of all women who worked and suffered tirelessly for your right to vote. Do it because you FUCKING CAN. And write in a candidate if you don't like your choices. Or get involved in politics so you can run or get someone else on the ballot. There's simply no fucking excuse.

And if you want to be an anarchist, fine, but you are in the minority and your fucking revolution is never going to come, so you're better working within the system.

Re: 101

[identity profile] cdaae.livejournal.com 2008-08-20 04:20 am (UTC)(link)
People who vote are spitting in the face of everyone who's worked and suffered tirelessly to take away the power of an oppression hierarchical system. :)

Re: 101

[identity profile] beandelphiki.livejournal.com 2008-08-19 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
But the secret explicitly said they don't care.

Unless you meant, "in general," but...whatever your reasons are for NOT voting, it's not going to make the results any better. So I'm not sure I can get behind anyone doing that.

Re: 101

[identity profile] cdaae.livejournal.com 2008-08-19 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, true, it doesn't state why they don't care. But from anonymous comments earlier on, which I'm assuming to be from the OP, it sounds like they have a political reason rather than an apathetic reason.

If you don't believe that whoever you vote for will make things in any way meaningfully better, refusing to participate in a system you think is bankrupt has a long and respectable history.

OP of 101

(Anonymous) 2008-08-19 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I meant I might care because it would be someone other than the usual round up of corporate stooges and mouthpieces for the system, you got it. Thanks.

Re: OP of 101

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-08-19 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
...

...

...

Because a guy who exploits people's disillusionment with the system in order to sell records and make money is definitely not contributing to the system at all and would make an excellent and reliable leader.

Re: OP of 101

[identity profile] cdaae.livejournal.com 2008-08-19 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Hahahahahahahaha.

I'd fricking pay to see a Presidential Debate between Bush and Marilyn Manson though, wouldn't you??

Re: OP of 101

[identity profile] paperclipchains.livejournal.com 2008-08-19 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah.

"Satanist!"
"Fuck the man!"
"Heathen!"
"Fuck the system!"
"God is with me!"
"God is dead!"

Re: OP of 101

[identity profile] cdaae.livejournal.com 2008-08-19 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
From his brief bit in Bowling for Columbine, I suspect he'd put his reasonable person hat on and completely pwn Bush in debate. But god, I hope he'd do it in full stage make-up and regalia.

Re: OP of 101

[identity profile] mahkia.livejournal.com 2008-08-20 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
This. Please. All of it.

Re: 101

[identity profile] beandelphiki.livejournal.com 2008-08-20 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I take your point in the extreme example you give below, but generally, practically speaking...

If you don't like any candidate, then someone you don't want in office is getting in anyway, and without any say from you. I'd still rather pick the least-awful option myself.

Re: 101

[identity profile] cdaae.livejournal.com 2008-08-20 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
I think both options are perfectly valid... it's when you lose any respect for the office itself that it becomes pointless to continue to vote for anyone to be put into it, unless perhaps they're someone you really, really do like.

Not that I'd be picking out Marilyn Manson for it! ;)

Re: 101, 104, 109, 131, 140, 154, 161, 165, 182

[identity profile] llivla.livejournal.com 2008-08-19 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
101. THIS.

140. I'd want to be Seth. He was the coolest werewolf ever. ;) And Edward made him muffins. Or something, I can't really remember. I found that way too amusing imagining Edward making me muffins. And the coolest vampire for me was definitely Alice so I could be snarky, but your point on Carlisle was well said.

101. You should care enough to vote, period. There's just no excuse for this.

YES. I can understand not voting if you can't get behind any candidate's platform, but to just not care is stupid.

And people like the OP (the ones that don't care about voting when they can legally do so) are always the first to bitch about what's wrong with the country.

Re: 101

[identity profile] cdaae.livejournal.com 2008-08-19 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
The OP said they don't care because they think both candidates are just mouthpieces for the same system, in comments above and earlier.
