Hold up, it's a mockumentary? I love those! How did I not know this?

Netflix doesn't really make it obvious and their plot summaries kind of suck. But it is a great spoof of true crime documentaries and I highly recommend it!

It's an INCREDIBLY good mockumentary

Yes! And a really good one, too. Seriously, I can't remember the last mockumentary that was this dead on in terms of parodying the original material. It's very obvious that the creators love true crime and true crime docs, and at the same time they're able to laugh at themselves and zero in the quirks of the genre. If you've listened to Serial or watched much true crime documentary material, you will totally recognize how eerily on point American Vandal is, while being utterly over the top ridiculous.

I was just coming here to say exactly this. (Not that I'm expecting it to be similar...)

If you haven't already seen them, I recommend:

Unforgotten
River
Foyle's War
Endeavour

I just finished the third season of Unforgotten. I love that show, and I love River even more. (I just love Nicola Walker in police shows I guess.) The other two I've never seen so I'll check them out.

Unforgotten is a great show and I've heard very little buzz about it in the U.S. so I hope more people watch it!

Foyle's War and Endeavour are great if you like a period feel to your mysteries. Endeavour is a prequel to Inspector Morse, which is also a classic.

I had to buy Unforgotten on Region 2 discs and play them on my computer but I hope it gets on some streaming service in the U.S.

It's so brilliant. I couldn't stop laughing but it was also just such a real depiction of teenagers and a perfect send-up of true crime documentaries.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-17 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the fact that it's perfect at all 3 things it's trying to do is so incredible. You would think you have to trade off between the humor and the teenage aspects and the mockumentary aspects, but it just balances them all and knocks them all out of the park. It's incredible.

Broadchurch is hugely overrated, period.
