Good storytelling is rarely just about originality, though. Dumb ideas aren't necessarily an obstacle, either. It's all in the execution.

Yes but when it comes to horror, my execution stinks.

Well...your scenario was funny, but if that's how it goes when you write, the issues have nothing to do with horror. It's mostly to do structure and not setting up exposition properly, stuff that would be a problem no matter what genre the story was.
