Most girls would yell and scream at any boy who played with or pulled their hair for any reason, or at least get annoyed. But Dorothy Anne was too wrapped up in her book to even notice anyone was there, much to Carlos's disappointment.

"Hey...hey, couldn't you at least turn around and say hello?" he groaned. "Come on, DA."

After five more minutes of pulling and wheedling, she finally did turn around. The fact that she was smiling scared Carlos more than any fit of anger ever would.

"Uh...hi! Nice weather we're having, huh?" he laughed nervously.

"According to my research, when a boy continually bothers a girl it means he likes her," Dorothy Ann said. Carlos gulped.

"W-well...I mess around with everyone, you know?" he said. "And you needed someone to...y'know, get your nose out of that book." But he wasn't fooling her one bit and he knew it. Why did I have to fall for the smartest girl in class?

"But," Dorothy Anne countered, "you don't make a point of 'messing with' the other girls at least once a day. And I've seen the way you've been looking at me."

Carlos ran a hand through his hair and sighed in defeat.

"Well, now that the cat's out of the bag, the only thing left is to hope you might like me back."

Her answer was to lean forward and press a kiss to his cheek.
