So this one's kinda dumb, but how exactly do fic exhanges work and where does one sign up for them?

1. You find them in whatever fandom hubs are around - usually tumblr these days, I guess, though they originated on LJ and there are some run on DW. AO3 also has a system for it, though I've only ever been linked there and don't know if you can actively search for them.

2. The place you sign up will have information like how long your fic should be, what ratings and content are acceptable, and the important dates: When you get your assignment, the deadline for submitting your assignment, and the time the fics are published.

3. When you sign up, you'll probably have the option of listing things you absolutely won't write.

4. Then you make prompts of your own! Depending on the challenge, you either make these when you sign up, or you'll be asked to make a post on your own blog about it.

5. Finally: You get your assignment from the people running the exchange, which will usually have several different prompts. You write one of them, submit your fic to the exchange, and wait for the day they start posting the fic.
