Worst book you've ever read?

(Anonymous) 2018-10-20 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
And why?

Stranger in a Strange Land. Heinlein is so far up his own ass that he forgets he had a plot less than a third of the way in. to this day I have no idea why I even bothered to finish it when I've stopped reading less shitty books for less shitty reasons.

What's funny about that is that Heinlein wrote at least 7 or 80 books that are just purely and obviously worse

thank god I got immediately put off his writing and never discovered those, then.

The Write Stuff by Jahnna N. Malcolm, which, IIRC, is the joint penname for a married couple, Jahnna and Malcolm.

I read it in high school & don't remember much, but I remember thinking it was worse than Twilight, which I absolutely despised at the time. What I do remember that it was basically a Cyrabo-esque plot, which I love, but it was done poorly. The characters were unlikable & the dialogue was stunted.

Oh god, I know them from the podcast The Babysitters Club Club. They ghostwrote some of the books. The podcast has a lot of jokes about them being two people merged into one. IIRC their books are a little off and have weird humor.

Does it count if I dropped it ten pages in because of how godawfully juvenile the prose was? It was published by some small-scale publishing house and the author had apparently been in some kind of creative writing classes, but none of that stopped her from having her first-person narrator tell herself what she looked like.

Ah, yes. I love to frequently remind myself what I look like. LMAO

I can't remember the name of it, but as a high school graduation present I got one of those books that was supposed to be a guide for young women entering adulthood, and the two authors presented themselves as the "cool aunt" type with "fresh, new, hip" advice. Their tone was so condescending and most of the "advice" was just them telling you to follow their own personal preferences. Including how to rule out dating partners based on how they dress, a list of movies you MUST watch to be cultured and books that you absolutely must NEVER watch because they're trash, etc.

They’re not objectively bad, I guess, but I couldn’t funish Madame Bovary or Wuthering Heights because I didn’t like a single character and didn’t feel like reading about characters I found annoying or hated being miserable for hundreds of pages.

I didn't finish it bc it was so bad, but The Land of Painted Caves by Jean Auel.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-20 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
Sa

It was bad bc it was clearly a contractual obligation and Jean Auel didn't gaf anymore. It was a rehash of shit from her previous novels and stopped just shy of that "...it was a very, very, very, very bright, sunshiny day that was very, very, very, very bright and sunshiny" bullshit we used to try in elementary school to make it look like wed written more than we had/actually gave a shit about what we'd written.

Man this is such a subjective question, because I can overlook 'bad' writing sometimes if the story/characters are engaging, but I don't care if the writing is perfect if I find the book dragging or boring (looking at you, Dracula and LOTR).

the worst book I recently read part of was an advice book for teenage girls w/Asperger's telling them they shouldn't be interested in science, Star Wars, etc. and should try as hard as possible to be like "all the other girls who are interested in boys and fashion".
Burn it.

What the ever-loving fuck. Suggesting that they not totally ignore stuff their peers are into is one thing, but telling them to ditch their own interests entirely for stereotypical teenage girl preoccupations is a fetid load of bullshit.

Tie between Gabriel’s Inferno and Hush Hush. GI is a 50SoG rip-off that simply blew my mind in terms of how little the author understood how grad school and Dante’s Inferno work, with the most contrived plot and manufactured drama I’ve ever read. Literally the entire book could have been resolved with like one minute of conversation between the romantic leads.

Hush Hush is a Twilight ripoff where the male lead is secretly a fallen angel and I swear to god Patch the male lead is somehow even worse than Edward in the stalking/sexual assault department. Like at one point the heroine actually goes to a teacher with the students handbook stating quite clearly that she does not feel safe near Patch but gets blown off.

Wild Animus. Couldn't get past 3 pages of it.
