Anyone here watching or watched the Haunting of Hill House?

(Anonymous) 2018-10-20 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
I just finished it!

I'm not sure? People seem to like it, and I love the book, but I'm confused by the fact that it seems to have a completely different plot from the book?

Yeah, it's more "inspired by" than a true adaptation. But I'm liking it so far.

Good to know! I'll probably start it next time I'm in the mood for horror

I didn't even realize there WAS a book (somehow I missed that memo lol) even though I like both the original Haunting of Hill House film, as well as the Haunting.

Is the book good?

I'm watching and enjoying it so far!

Maybe Spoilers?

I just finished it and I enjoyed it right up until the end. The end was just sort of... man I don't know how to explain how it made me feel. Incomplete? Annoyed? Like... it gave off this air of, "Hey look! I totally explained everything, see!" but it didn't feel that way to me?

I liked the ending. I know some people wanted a less happy one, but eh. I am tired to that kind of ending for horror movies. Plus, it leaves some stuff open for if they want to do a season 2.

I was okay with it being unhappy, I just felt there were SO many questions (to me) that didn't get answered about the house, the history, the kids, etc.

I do hope they do a season two if only so maybe I get some answers, lol.

Spoilers

Yeah, I'm usually an easy sell on upbeat endings. I just find super dark endings hard to take. But in the case of THOHH the ending just didn't seem to fit with the rest of the story. Basically, the majority of the season made it seem that a deep, cruel malevolence was inherent to Hill House - and then the ending was like, never mind, love is enough, it's mostly okay really. But for me there just wasn't nearly enough of a transition from the former narrative stance to the latter.

If you haven't watched Oculus, I recommend watching it. It's written by the same person who wrote THOHH, and the stories have extremely strong similarities. I mean, they're so similar that I feel like Mike Flanagan was writing Oculus and realized he wanted to take the story in two very different directions and had to pick one. So he wrote Oculus, and then he turned around and wrote THOHH so that he could explore that basic premise/dynamic some more. Oculus is a lot scarier, and a lot darker than THOHH, but together they make an interesting pair of stories.
