"...whereas the criticism of Rose was ostensibly about the "bad writing" and really about the fact that she was a female Asian character."

Meh. I'm female and Asian. I was happy to see an Asian woman in a prominent role, but she definitely could've been a lot better written. The same could be said of most of the female characters in the new Star Wars movies. There just isn't time for much character development in these blockbuster films.

Oh, trust me - I agree. The writing is bad. Bad writing alone doesn't explain the disproportionate hate her character got and the abuse the actress got, which is much more than that received by other female characters, who with the exception of Leia, are much more hated than the arguably equally underdeveloped male characters.

I agree in re: sexism.

But if all the characters are underdeveloped, should it still be considered a flaw? Maybe they're just developed as much as they need to be for the genre.

That's an interesting point. I don't watch Star Wars movies for deep and complex character development. Which may be part of why I really liked the movie and loved Rose.

(I'm not saying people can't want better character development, or that they're wrong for complaining when it's not there. Just... this comment makes a lot of sense to me.)

Sure - I don't necessarily consider it a flaw, more of a fact, that these characters are underdeveloped. Clearly to the people complaining about it, it's a flaw (or at least they're looking for an excuse to whine about instead of what really bothers them, which might just be female and/or minority characters having leading roles).

You can certainly make that argument since the movies have done well in the box office and most viewers don't seem to care. But there's still plenty of room for individual opinion. Mine is that all the characters are underdeveloped - some more so than others.

IA that Rose gets a disproportionate amount of hate and it's likely racism/misogyny. But I don't particularly like that ALL criticism of her character is dismissed as mindless hate. It's not. There's plenty of legit criticism of the character, and lumping everything into the same category isn't productive.
