126. PARADISE LOST. :3 Favourite epic poem ever. Although dude, seriously? Satanism =/= Satan in Paradise Lost. Satanism is more about putting one's self before others, but not going out of the way to do harm to others and doesn't really mesh with the character in the book.

187. Uhm. Dude. It isn't the religion, it's the people.

Thanks for saying both of those better than I could.

Man, I really should read Paradise Lost again; I just remember skimming and half-listening during the lectures, but even then, it was pretty epic. Well, I mean, it was epic.

[identity profile] megkips.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Don't mention it. :3 Silly people are silly!

I usually reread PL once to three times in a given year and own three copies. (Two were gifts, admittedly.)

[identity profile] sox-4-puppets.livejournal.com 2008-08-20 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you thank you.

Do people just.. not UNDERSTAND the difference between either?

putting one's self before others, but not going out of the way to do harm to others

Hey that reminds me of Satan from Paradise Lost!

(Anonymous) 2008-08-21 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
No, he was more an "Evil, be thou my good" kinda guy.

(Anonymous) 2008-08-21 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
Which reminds me a lot of The Satanic Bible, especially the Book Of Satan.

(Anonymous) 2008-08-21 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
You really don't get that literature =/= religion, do you?

(Anonymous) 2008-08-21 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
LOL, it does for some. Hello the biggest selling book of all time.

(Anonymous) 2008-08-21 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
It's a collection of historical texts written over a long period of time. Not a single work by a single author. You could call it history if you liked, but literature would be more like something written by Keats or Dickens.

(not the anon, just someone who agrees)

[identity profile] vulgarweed.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 04:56 am (UTC)(link)
True but still, if you don't believe, it's just another book. Or collection of books. It's literature in the same sense that collections of Greek stories about the gods are.

But knowing the "author" doesn't preclude it being a holy text, if you believe. Muslims know precisely who "wrote" the Qur'an and when - Muhammad took the dictation in the 7th century (AD). It's still a holy text because they believe--and it's "literature" if you don't.

So why not base your religion on something by Milton - or Keats or Dickens - if you believe in the content? What's the difference?

The difference is that the Bible is unique. It was written over the space of 1500 years by at least 40 authors, from every walk of life. Whether you're a Christian or not, that's pretty amazing from an historical perspective.

[identity profile] tacky-tramp.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
Uhm. Dude. A religion is a cultural artifact made by people.

(Anonymous) 2008-08-21 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
Uhm, Dude. Religion refers to the tenets and belief structure. The people are the practitioners of the religion. There's a difference between Christianity as a concept and Christians as a collective noun.

Re: 187

[identity profile] xixie.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, it's both. Christians use the religion as a tool of hatred and bigotry. But then again, it's a pretty ridiculous religion too. The Bible is vaguely historical, but overall, a work of fiction. And our society encourages people to believe that a dude fit all the animals in the world on a boat and that women are inferior beings who should defer to their husbands as a godhead.

Both are stupid and destructive.

I'll repeat what I said above: The Bible is unique. It was written over the space of 1500 years by 40 authors, from every walk of life. It's not "vaguely" historical, it's a collection of historical documents. It is history, in the same way Herodotus and Plato and other Classical authors are, but with more people participating and over a much longer time span.

[identity profile] xixie.livejournal.com 2008-08-22 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
It's a collection of documents that were written during a period of history. That doesn't make the things in them actually true, at least no more true than Beowulf or Gilgamesh. It is history in exactly the same way Herodotus and Plato and other Classical authors are. However, most rational people don't expect me to take "The Origin of Love" story from the Symposium as fundamentally true.
