What, you mean when people use a map of the UK which only shows the UK? Yeah, how dare they.

Well last time I checked when you're showing a map, you don't normally cut out other countries.

That's kind of weird, now that I look at it. Isn't Northern Ireland the part that's not considered part of the UK?

Nope, Northern Ireland is part of the UK, whereas the Republic of Ireland (in the south) is not. It's looks a bit weird on a map, but it's no different than having a picture of France and cutting out the rest of Europe, really.

And you already realised - sorry, took too long typing :)

One of these days I will crack the code of the United Kingdom. I'm still working on the British/English distinction and I think I've almost got it down. Unless it's just more common to use English, Irish, Scottish, or Welsh where appropriate.

Uhh..yeah, you know, Ireland as a whole. Just because we're not part of the UK doesn't mean it doesn't exist haha

But if the map is a map of the UK... If they'd included the Republic of Ireland, why not include every other place that isn't in the UK and make an atlas of it?

I know it's part of the UK..but it's just something that's always bugged me..they don't take Northern Ireland out of maps over here just because it's part of the UK.

It's probably just to prevent anyone being misled.

That's because Northern Ireland is part of the same landmass as Ireland-Ireland, surely?

Exactly..so why would they remove the south of Ireland? If people really weren't able to tell the difference between Northen Ireland and the south they could just colour it a different colour on maps or something

Well, since it's not a road map, it's a map showing the member countries of GB, wouldn't it be perhaps worse to include southern Ireland? It's a country in its own right, after all.

I'm not so sure about that, I think more people would be annoyed that they'd cut us out :P

Yes, thank you, I most definitely am! Urgh, I hate seeing maps like that, it's as bad as seeing a map with the UK and Ireland labelled the "British Isles". Don't get me wrong, I love Britain, I love the British people, I love visiting the country etc etc, but stuff like this just annoys me no end! Someone else posted a comment somewhere to this post and they called Northern Ireland a magical and floating place out in the sea ... maps like that definitely make it seem like that! What did the poster of the secret/maker of the map have to lose by sticking in the rest of Ireland? Because most maps I've seen of other countries have the surrounding countries marked in... sheesh.

How many maps of Ireland do you see without the north marked in?

I know! Me too, I was born in England but I think it's ridiculous..it's probably the fighting Irish in me but it always makes me feel as if they're making a dig at the rest of Ireland that isn't in the UK (though in absolutely no way am I saying that's what the poster of the comment is doing)

I mean they even do it on the weather news! Arghhh. I'm ranting too now haha :P
