...

are you insane, or just really, really ignorant about history?

Combine a country smarting from blows to economy and pride after WWI, a charismatic, psychotic leader, convenient scapegoats for economic woes, and an incredible PR campaign, and you have a recipe for major international disaster.

You do know that Hitler wasn't Christian, right? He had Jewish ancestors, was raised Catholic, but blamed the Church in large part for "the racial situation" in Europe as he saw it, and left it behind.

In addition to the fact he wasn't Christian, he hated organised religion. He wanted the people of Germany to idolise and worship him. That's one of the reasons why the Hitler Youth was created, so he could brainwash them from young.
Kind of like how the people of Russia treated their Tsar but not as radical.

You think 1900 years of Christianity didn't have any influence on the values and ideals of those who engineered the Holocaust? Then you're a fool.

No, really. Are you stupid, or are you incapable of thinking about history in stretches of more than 50 years at a time?

You think 1900 years of Christianity didn't have any influence on the values and ideals of those who engineered put their own lives at risk to selflessly save people from the Holocaust and stop the atrocities? Then you're a fool.

There, fixed that for you.

You think economic status didn't have more? Look who actually fought the battles, and who ordered them.

You're joking, right? This isn't Vietnam we're talking about.

In WWI & WWII, young aristocrats perished by the thousands, right along with the working class. Buying rank meant you got better food; it didn't keep you off the front lines.

I think you need to check your history.

Not only was Hitler a pretty devout Xtian, (albeit his personal views most closely aligned with protestantism) but he conspired with the Catholic Church to help him round up the Jews, Romanies, homosexuals, and other 'undesirables'. The church finally apologized for their part in the last couple years. Better late than never, I suppose.

Actually, you're wrong. Hitler worshipped himself. He was very into the occult and Christian esoterica, but just read Mein Kampf. He was a scarily brilliant madman, but his views didn't follow any known religion.

Re: 187

[identity profile] mands-leanan.livejournal.com 2008-08-22 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
No, I'm not.

Worshiping himself just made him an egomaniac. It would be more accurate to say he tried to reinvent the religion to make it more suitable to his goals, but at least publicly, he was a Jesus-Freak. Wikipedia has a mention of it, though you could probably find a better source with little effort.

Also, people are more likely to take your view seriously if you don't hide behind anonymity.

//he conspired with the Catholic Church//

Funny, because hundreds of Catholics were kept and/or killed in the concentration camps for *opposing* the Nazis. Saint Maximilian Maria Kolbe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maximilian_Kolbe)? Blessed Titus Brandsma (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Titus_Brandsma)? Saint Edith Stein? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edith_Stein) Blessed Bernard Lichtenberg (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernhard_Lichtenberg)? And what about the supposed "Nazi Pope" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hitler%27s_Pope) aka Pius XII, who was actually bitched at by Nazis ()?

Someone might need to check their history too.

Wait, are you actually suggesting that because the dissenters were punished, that the whole was not an anti-semitic mass that embraced a publicly Christian figure that brought Germany out of its depression?

Sorry, I think Cornwell was right the first time.
