149. Yeah right. There IS a middle ground between "all yaoi fangirls are nuts" and "all straight fangirls are nuts" - sometimes the subtext you see IS nothing, and sometimes it isn't. It's not automatically heteronormative.

But dismissing my pairings (whether or not I actually think they're canon) because I'm looking through "slash goggles" without acknowledging that when you see het couples where there's no actual pairing that's "het goggles" is heteronormativity, because you're privileging the heterosexual pairings as more valid.

I'm not saying anyone's crazy, just that the dismissive idea of "slash goggles" is a heteronormatizing mechanism.

But the crux of your argument is that everyone sees het where there is no actual pairing, which isn't necessarily true (especially since people who bitch about slash goggles tend to do so on the basis that they deviate from canon, and so ship canon ships).

I understand exactly what you're saying, but it's just not always applicable. It also sort of ignores the broad, overarching complaint about slash goggles: That everything is slashed, and it's for the pr0n rather than for an actual relationship that exists or could exist. Obviously that isn't completely true either. I just feel like your argument's application is very narrow.

It's sort of funny that you say that, because in Jade Empire (the Bioware RPG post-KOTOR and pre-Mass Effect) you *could* have a male/male romantic relationship as well as a female/female one (or a male/female + female/male one, of course).

Clearly Bioware is fine with having it. Which is why it's extra frustrating that it wasn't in Mass Effect :/

Of course. But if the industry wants to stay complacent for fear of lost profits, nothing is going to happen. I don't know. Bioware needs to keep pushing before I give credit.
