I'd point out your horrible logic and the facts that a huge majority of the human population his heterosexual, not to mention that most mainstream media goes through sources homophobic enough to make canon gay pairings ridiculously rare in anything there's half a chance kids will watch...

But that's heteronormativity, right? Damn us icky straight people and all our dreadfully homophobic "facts" and "deductive reasoning." Het goggles indeed!

Oh please. Yes, most people are straight. But since there is a sizably large minority that isn't, the chance of any given person not being straight is still high enough that it's kinda totally homophobic to assume.

Particularly when this is used as a justification for asserting that people whose entire relationship history we don't know, just a small part of it, must be straight, because bisexuals don't exist and nobody ever falls in love with someone they wouldn't normally.

But the concept of "slash goggles" is dismissive. Whether or not my pairings are canon, if your pairings are not canon and yet you're assuming all the characters are straight, that's your het goggles at work. There's a significant minority of people in the world who are queer in some flavor or another, so, yes, your "facts" are homophobic and they're also not particularly factual. Sorry.

So, in your world, do a whole lot of people fly? Shoot lasers out of their eyes?

Statistically, can a whole bunch of people dodge bullets and leap from rooftop to rooftop?

Applying real-world statistics to a fictional setting is retarded. But, even if we do: The ratio of gay men to straight men is 1:10, therefore, in every cast of ten fictional males, it can be reasonably assumed that at least one of them is gay.

But that still means jack shit.

Plenty of what gets pegged as "slash goggles" isn't so much "These characters are obviously gay in canon!" as "From the way this character acts and interacts, I read him as gay/in love with a character of the same sex so most likely gay or bi. It may not have been what the author intended, although that would be great, but it's what I see."

Not that some people don't slash just because OMG HOT GUYS. But some het fans ship just because OMG GUY AND GIRL too, even when it wouldn't/doesn't work. For instance, I'm in a fandom where the second most popular pairing is a guy and girl whose relationship is consistently portrayed as entirely platonic.

It's not about thinking something's canon, it's about what ideas and preconceptions you come to the table with, and what you put into practice. Some slash fans wear goggles. Some don't. Some het fans wear goggles. Some don't.

And yes I am arguing for the existence of het goggles. You're wearing them every time you ship a guy and a girl on no stronger evidence than that they're a guy and a girl. (Editorial 'you', of course. Obviously, I don't know jack about you personally.)
