That isn't Christianity, though. The institute is a bunch of corrupt, old, white guys taking advantage of a very large following of people who will believe what they say. Christianity is a religion, and, like all religions, it's just a set of beliefs.

Also, you are completely ignoring more than half of the Eurasian continent right there. I promise you that the church was never a powerful force oppressing much of anything in most of Asia.

...I just realized that you're probably a troll. Way to go self.

Next time I make a secret, I'll give it footnotes.

You are overlooking the whole of the British Empire, and the Christian West's economic influence which caused so many wars all over Asia.

That is not to say there haven't been any other negative forces, but no one single other one of the same size.

I'm not a troll. Philosophers have written books saying much the same thing, my opinion isn't even that unusual.

Or you could just word it correctly.

Since when has 'economic influence' been a religious thing? I get that you mean the church and not Christianity, but economic policy is pretty damn far from religious philosophy no matter HOW you look at it.

People really don't know how to connect the dots anymore do they? All these areas of life, the political, the spiritual, the religious, the economic, they are not separate areas. They are strands which are intricately connected. Systems of economy are based on philosophies, which stem from people thinking about the values they are brought up with. Christianity has taught people to bow to the masters, and then it's taught them to work for the masters and to exploit the resources of nature, it has laden us with dead morals and millstones. It has influenced every aspect of our culture.

I'm finding these arguments very diverting tonight, thank you.

What, though, if your argument against Christianity is irrelevant? What evidence do you have that if Christianity hadn't risen to power, something any better would have risen in its place?

Re: 187

(Anonymous) 2008-08-20 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
That's still irrelevant to my secret, although it's the most intelligent question I've been asked tonight.

Re: 187

[identity profile] cdaae.livejournal.com 2008-08-20 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I notice you are avoiding answering a lot of questions here tonight.

How's that working out for you?

Re: 187

(Anonymous) 2008-08-21 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Not getting sidetracked is working out for me just fine, thanks for asking.

Re: 187

[identity profile] cdaae.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
You keep letting the other anon pwn you. Is there something distracting you this evening, something else on your mind? Have a cup of tea and let's sit down and talk about it. I'm sure everything will be alright!

Re: 187

[identity profile] ketchupblood.livejournal.com 2008-08-20 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
xDD I think this is the point where I stop taking you seriously.

Re: 187

[identity profile] cdaae.livejournal.com 2008-08-20 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, the first part of it was true.

Re: 187

[identity profile] ketchupblood.livejournal.com 2008-08-20 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I know, but p → q != q → p and correlation or even a connection does not mean the same thing as causation.

More importantly, though, I have a shitload of homework to do and I can't spend all night arguing against invalid points and misconceptions, as amusing as it is. Besides, there are plenty of other people doing it better than me, so I'll just leave it to them and tune in later or something. :D

Re: 187

It has influenced every aspect of our culture.

"Our"?

Not everyone on the internet belongs to the same culture, for crying out loud. Example:

Christianity has taught people to bow to the masters, and then it's taught them to work for the masters

Christianity is not the largest religion in Japan, and has had far less of an influence there than in Europe and the Americas. Yet Japanese culture (I'm generalizing here) contains an even greater emphasis on respect for leaders and the value of hard work. I don't think those are bad traits, though you may disagree.

What is bad are exremes - fundamentalism, fanatics, cultural paranoia, and obsession.

Oooh, I think you just pwned them.
