Well, I stand corrected on Christianity. I've read more of the Koran than I have of the New Testament, after all.

Organized religion, this is why I hate you so much. Islam, Christianity, Hinduism (lol, you were born a member of the warrior caste, so it's okay for you to kill people!).

Waitaminute. Fail source is fail. I do not stand corrected, because apparently I understand Christian Dogma better than this site. New Testament pretty much overrides the Old, and the New Testament has, like, one passage about 'the sword'. Everything else, from what I've seen, is sunshine and daisies.

Nope, sorry, you fail again. When Christians get pissy about homoseuxality, they quote Leviticus.

Re: 187

(Anonymous) 2008-08-21 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
Nope. They use Leviticus as a buffer. The real reason behind their anti-homosexuality is PAUL. Paul is also the reason why women are not supposed to become clergy. Kindly stop failing.

Because if they gave two shits about the Old Testament, they would keep the dietary laws and not work on the Sabbath (the latter is punishable by death, BTW).

Re: 187

You kept saying that the cited parts in the Bible are not Christian because they are from the Old Testament.

St. Paul is in the New Testament. What, are you going to say that not only the Old Testament but now also the NEW Testament is not really Christian?

Re: 187

(Anonymous) 2008-08-21 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
I think the real reason is that they don't like homosexuality themselves. (I think they prefer women not being clergy for reasons other than Paul too.) But I've heard both Paul and Leviticus used to back up homosexuality being evil. The Bible spends far less time obsessed with the subject than many people today do, so anything close to a mention gets pounced on. Christians who are pro-gay rights often quote Jesus in my experience.

That being said, I think that Christianity is an illogical belief system that promotes not taking responsibility for one's actions. And I can certainly see why murder is easier to reconcile with the whole Jesus-cleansing-all-sins thing.

But it's only one factor of many in the fail of the last 2000 years, and I do believe that, at its core, it is nonviolent.

It's alright :)
In case you're more interested in the subject of New Testament violence and ethics, there are a couple of books (http://www.amazon.com/Violence-New-Testament-Shelly-Matthews/dp/0567025004).

Re: New Testament

(Anonymous) 2008-08-21 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
You do know that the Book of Revelation, your "favorite", is an account of a vision of the end of world, and not injunctions about how people ought to behave to one another, right?

Of course there's scary stuff in that; it's like someone talking about a nightmare she or he had.

This site you're linking to is really poorly-written and the quotes are taken out of context, rendering them meaningless.

If you're interested in intelligent, thought-provoking commentary on Christianity, I recommend Modern Physics and Ancient Faith (http://www.amazon.com/Modern-Physics-Ancient-Faith-Stephen/dp/0268021988/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1219289823&sr=8-1) by Stephen M. Barr.

Obviously. Book of Revelation describes God, his Angels and then Christ, torturing and mass-killing sinners. It's not about how people ought to behave, it's about what will happen to them if they will not.

the quotes are taken out of context

Uh no, they are not. Seriously, read the scripture yourself. You will see that none of these quotes are 'wronged' if separated from the whole.
