It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that what they have in common is being vehemently against organized religion, Christianity mainly.

Are you people for REAL? They were very different writers with very different philosophies (all of them more talented than Pullman), and to boil them down to "being against organized religion" makes my head spin. You can't possibly really be that stupid. That's all you see in Mark Twain? He was a big fan of Christ and the New Testament, btw, and read the Bible often, despite not being a Christian. He was a brilliant social satririst.

Marxism and Objectivism are organized systems of thought with a lot of similarities to organized religion - the difference being that they deify Man instead of God.

Also, I didn't mean to be insulting. I get sarcastic when I am tired. My apologies. I can link you to info about Twain reading the Bible if you like, and there's a quote about him admiring Christ but thinking Christ would not be a Christian somewhere but I am too lazy to look it up atm. Also there's his play The Diaries of Adam & Eve, which is both funny and touching.

I actually fangirl Twain *clings to A Pen Warmed Up in Hell nearby*. I didn't mean to make it sound as if his critisizing of Christianity is all there is about him. He indeed did like Jesus overall, hell, even Dawkins does as well as other atheists http://www.atheists-for-jesus.com/

I may not agree with Rand, but at least she's not a bloodthirsty, axe-grindy hack like Pullman. At least his books are too boring to make me as angry as they would if they were decently-written.

I think Rand and Pullman are both bloodthirsty (IF WE DISAGREE WITH IT IT LET US DESTROY ITTTTT) but Rand is less of a hack.

See, that's how I feel about Rand. Un-fucking-readable. She's like the atheistic version of 'Left Behind.' Cardboard characters who exist only to advance various aspects of an agenda.

Give me one character she's ever created as vivid as Lee Scoresby or Iorek Byrnison or Mary Malone.

(This isn't an ideological/religious thing: I think C.S. Lewis was a way better writer than Ayn Rand too; even though I find his cutesy asides kind of cloying, I can forgive that for the good stories.)

I said she /was/ bloodthirsty and axe-grindy! I just don't think she's a hack, and her books weren't intended for children, which makes a difference to me. Your comparison to Left Behind made me LOL, though.

I think Dagny Taggart and John Galt are fascinating, and Rand's command of English is worlds better than Pullman's - but different strokes. I disagree with her philosophy, but her writing style interests me.

I was not referring to Pullman at all.

I only posted examples of people who, yes, ruthlessly critisized the abrahamic religions and most notably Christianity- and yet were not angsty teens, like some Christians here automatically call every person who critisizes Christianity.

Thing is, due to the secret post, we are talking specifically about Christianity, not religions in general. That's why I cited authors who had a beef with Christianity, and didn't include others who targeted the ancient greek religion (like Diagoras and Theodorus the Atheist) or Buddhism (like Jeong Dojeon).
