Inspired by 5: Bad role models in the media...

What characters do you think are poor role models and why? By that I mean characters who are the hero/heroine of the story, NOT villains or other characters who aren't actually being set up as role models at all.

Ferris Bueller because he's a selfish asshole. But I don't think people generally think of him as a role model. (I know, I'm taking the movie way too seriously...)

Lessa from the Pern books. Off the top of my head, she came up as the most extreme example of the heroine who's supposed to be independent and "feisty" but is actually just a world-class jerk who overreacts to everyone who doesn't do things exactly her way. And not all that independent after all since she still ends up with a man who also treats her like shit.

I simply devoured the Pern books back in junior high, but even then I had a lot of issues with them. Lessa and F'lar irritated me a lot and I didn't like Jaxom. There was also some iffy stuff with people with mental disabilities.

Harriet the Spy in all her snoopy, judgey, breaking and entering-y glory.

It's still a fun read, but kids, don't be Harriet.

I loved Harriet but I don't think you're supposed to copy her.

That was my favorite book as a kid but I see your point.

Like all of them??
I'm sure there are a few good ones here and there, but fiction is fiction through and through. Even when it's pretending to be real life. Never take a role model from TV, or movie- or any of the above, under, or in between...
Celebrities are people, wrong or right, they're mostly just trying to live their lives.
