Did you ever read/watch something as a kid that maybe you shouldn't have?

(Anonymous) 2018-10-20 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
How did it affect you?

I wasn't super young, but I stumbled onto a few of my parents' books that had uh, slightly more adult situations than they probably would've wanted me to see. Still extremely tame by fanfic standards though, lol. I was fascinated because I didn't know anything about sex, but I can't really say it's had any long lasting effects.

I was a REALLY precocious reader and when I was like 6 or 8 I read 2 Holocaust memoirs (Eli Wiesel's "Night" and Corrie ten Boom's "The Hiding Place"), which was probably not the best idea given that I didn't really get that these things had happened in a specific time and place and for all my tiny jewish ass knew they could randomly happen anywhere anytime.

I used to sneak downstairs to find horror movies on tv at night. I don't think it affected me much, TBH.

I did stumble on to my mother's romance novels at one point. Started my interest in sex a little early, and I do think that I have had porn addictions at a few points partly because my interest started early and I had no idea how to handle it given the "sex is evil, girls don't want it anyway" environment I grew up in.

The first time I ever heard about a blow job I was a kid and it was in a story in some dirty magazine I sneaked a peek at involving someone being forced to do it and it really fucked with my head at the time.

When I was seven or eight my mom handed me a copy of Clan of the Cave Bear and I got most of the way through it. The rapes didn’t bug me—I knew what sex was and that rape was bad, but it wasn’t uniquely traumatizing to read about. Ritual cannibalism, on the other hand... I stopped reading at the part where the priests are eating some guy’s brain and didn’t finish it for a year. But I wasn’t scarred for life or anything.

I read that as the priests were eating the guy's brain for a year and got confused.

I watched Attack of the 50-foot woman which is just a campy horror movie but I was very young and very easily scared so it was a bad idea for me to watch it. But it's not like I had horrible nightmares over it.

Oh christ - there's this book, Deerskin by... Robin McKinley? Pretty sure? It's based on this fairytale, Donkeyskin, and my dumb precocious self assumed it'd be okay based on that... (even though I knew a lot of fairy tales got a bit messed up?)
I stopped reading it a bit after the protagonist is violently raped by her father. Probably for the best.

Hoo boy. Yeah, that’s the only one of McKinley’s books I’ve never re-read, and I read it as an adult.

Me and my dad picked up Shadow Man for the Dreamcast from a car boot sale, and he was convinced it was fine for me to play at 12 years old. Granted he only played the first level where not a lot happens.

Hoo boy. There were a lot of nightmares.

I was 8 or 9 (just after it came out on video) when I saw The Hills Have Eyes Part 2 (the teenage son of the family friends my family was visiting was watching, while I was doodling in the same room).

I still have phobias because of it.

something I saw on Star Trek gave me phobias. I was a kid but older than 8 or 9, and no, I'm not going to say what it was here.

I read way too much fanfiction to really be bothered much as a kid- I still have a favourite fanfic that I read when I was like nine with some seriously kinky shit in it that I never though twice about;;

The only thing that bothered me (and it still does to this day) is when my sister brought me downstairs to show me the clip from Elfen Lied, where the schoolboys steal a puppy from one of the main girls and restrain her as they beat it to death in front of her... That, and the first 'Final Destination' movie. Those like traumatized me, I swear;;
