Whatcha Reading?

What are you reading? What have you finished lately? Anything you're looking forward to? Anything you particularly want to recommend? Fic, books, whatever.

The Great God Pan. Thanks, tv tropes. This is the book that inspired Lovecraft. I've only just started.

I'm reading The Witch Elm by Tana French. I'm enjoying it but I'm not very far into it. I also have The Legacy by Yrsa Sigurðardóttir out from the library. Both of those are mysteries. I recently finished The Woman in the Window, which is the kind of thing people compare to Gone Girl. I actually liked it better than Gone Girl but that's because I didn't like Gone Girl all that much.

I'm reading Bone Dance by Emma Bull, which is extremely good and clever and well-written so far, and I'm really liking it.

And I'm also reading some very trashy public-domain espionage fic, where the gang of German burglars talks like lower-class East End cockneys, which is very funny to me.

I recently finished rereading Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell. My feelings toward Cath changed a little and I felt more sympathetic towards her, but it still feels like there's too much going on and the ending's weak. I'm currently reading Nine Coaches Waiting by Mary Stewart and it's pretty good so far. It's got a cool gothic romance vibe.

She was a great writer, and that was one of her best. Real edge of the seat stuff.

I'm kinda holding off on starting anything new at the moment because FLOODED BASEMENT FUCKERY, but I have a translation of a Russian book, Vita Nostra, that'll arrive in a couple weeks. It's been described to me as Harry Potter by way of Tolstoy.

Tell us what the book is like when you get around to reading it, if you can. That sounds interesting to me. Also, sorry about your basement, and hope you get that sorted out soon.

Just finished rereading Terry Pratchett's Unseen Academicals. It had some good moments, but overall the series was going downhill at this point.

Started reading a long Pride and Prejudice fanfic, which seems promising so far.

Yeah, I think Unseen Academicals was the last one that I read, and I'm probably going to keep it that way.

What's the premise of the fic?

Sadly, I agree with you about Unseen Academicals. The wizards were never my favorite part of the Discworld anyway, but this wasn't his best work.

Someone got me a Stephen King book called The Outsider. I really do not like Stephen King but I am going to give it a shot. :(

I'm mixed on King. Sometimes he's really good, but other times he's really not. I think, personally, that he does better with short stories. Because he has great ideas, but he can't always stick the landing on longer stuff, and the filler he adds is often not good.

I finished Under The Skin last week and I thought it was incredible. Really gruesome and weird, but the best sci-fi book I've read in a while. I gather the movie is very very different.

Good Omens was translated to Norwegian and it's better than I expected so far. It's also been long enough since the last time I read it that there's bound to be some details I've forgotten.

I love Good Omens so much. (No seriously, I have 4 copies). I am so nervocited for the series.

Nearly finished Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets.

Been deeply impressed with it. Probably the most accurate non-fiction book about the police that I've seen.

I started re-reading the Sherlock Holmes canon recently. It wasn't intentional, but I had recently moved and those were some of the first books I unpacked, and the short stories are great for when you just want something to read before bed or aren't in a mood to commit to a whole book. I've re-read them in order before, but I'm being piecemeal about it this time. Not sure et if I will start over at the beginning.
