I had no idea how to pronounce the name 'Penelope', because i just didn't connect the written name with the spoken name. I thought it was pronounced 'Penne-lope'

My mom was transcribing a paper about a Greek play for my brother back when he was in high school. She kept calling it Anti-gone.

I thought Shawn and Sean were different. I pronounced it like seen.

I did that with the word Dalek when I jumped headlong into Doctor Who with episodes that didn't have the Daleks in them.(I read the word before I heard it so I pronounced it Da-lek instead of Dah-lek)

I... didn't know my own height. For years.
I figured I was about average height, and I thought the average height for an adult woman in my country was 175cm, so I thought I was about 175cm.

I am, as it happens, 163cm tall.
So... yeah. Just a wee bit off.

You thought the average height for adult women in your country was 175 cm (5 ft, 9 in)? The average? Huh.

On the other hand, 162.9 cm is average for adult women in the US, 163.2 cm in Bulgaria and Beijing, 163.3 cm in Canada, and 163.5 in Ireland, Scotland, and Shanghai.

I used to think I didn't like Korean food. I LOVE Korean food, it was just that the first few Korean restaurants I went to weren't very good ones.

I used to think that all foreign food was too greasy and sweet.
Nope. That's just how people in my country want to eat it because we're gross. Deep fried everything. Everywhere.

Back in junior high/high school, one of my friends and her sister would tell people my friend was adopted as a joke. People would comment on how alike they looked and they'd say "Yeah, that's so weird because [friend] is adopted!" and try to get people to believe it. All my friends were in on the joke, but no one clued me in and I believed it for ages.

It took me a very long time to realize that the written word "segue" went with the pronunciation "segway". I didn't confuse it with the vehicle, I just thought they were two different words. So when I saw the word written down, I just said it as "seh-goo" in my head. The minute it clicked in my head, I felt like an idiot.

(What makes this better? I took French for years and it still took until my adulthood for me to make the connection. I guess I never encountered the word in French somehow...)
