A question....why are 'meet the parent' moment in fics....

[personal profile] tabaqui 2018-10-23 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
so fucking weird? WHY do so many authors have this compulsion to either write super-nosey parents who ask uber-embarassing questions, or parents who canoodle and whatnot and then, of course, the 'kids' get all 'grossed out'.

Or parents who leap in in the first five seconds to tell 'embarrassing' stories.....

I was never embarrassed by my parents, or 'afraid' to introduce my friends or my boyfriend to them. I wanted them to meet - i thought my parents were fun and kinda cool, if a bit old-fashioned. I guess....

Why do fic-authors write parents so cliche and goofy, and always make the kid(s) all squirmy and freaked out and 'omg, i'm so sorry my parents acted like humans' and reverting to being 12 years old?

Maybe they haven't had an actual "meet the parents" experience and are just working off of cliches? Or maybe they just think it would make for a funny fic plot.

I don't know. All i know is, the majority of fic I've read lately have these so very weird (to me) 'meet the parents' scenes and I just don't get it.

I've posted about it before, but the one that gets me is when the characters go to meet the parents... and stay in the one partner's childhood bedroom (and usually have sex on their childhood bed) and the place is still full of all of their childhood stuff.

Right?
I mean - yes, my parents didn't empty my room the day i moved out and toss everything. But it didn't still have all my *stuff* in it. I took my stuff when i moved out.

And why do they always have this huge issue of 'omg, your parents will hear!!!' Um - i can keep quiet during sex if necessary. It's not *that* hard.

I think it's just a cultural cliche, honestly. And it's a cliche because for a lot of people, the awkwardness is something they identify with. While I love my parents, they can be totally embarrassing, super nosy, and yes, lots of embarrassing stories from my childhood.

I suppose. I just wish people would move past it, because it's kinda cringy to read over and over.

I hear you. Sometimes fandom isn't terribly original, unfortunately.

cliche, but also, like, if the scene just goes fine and non-dramatically, you wouldnt even have it in the fic

It could be interesting and 'dramatic' (if that's necessary for every scene) without being so boring and cliche. If they'd just *think* about it.
