Re: Fandom secrets you can't be bothered to make

Agree to disagree. You sound - whether you intend to or not - amazingly snobby and dismissive of fanfic, and fanfic writers. There's a *reason* i don't go out and buy new books every week or even month - I can't seem to find any that interest me. And when I check out books at the library because i read a review or saw an interesting discussion or summary, about nine times out of ten, the book itself is just...not good.

Not interesting, not original, not well crafted.

Frankly, seems to me, the odds of a good profic are about the same as the odds of a good fanfic. The bonus of fanfic is that it's something i'm interested in that isn't being constrained by editors and publishers who want things to be 'more mainstream' and 'not too out there'.

Of course we've all read utter dreck fanfic. But i've read utter dreck profic, too, stuff I wouldn't use to line a bird's cage. So really - what's the big leg up profic has, other than maybe making someone some money?

DA
No. Ayrt doesn't sound snobby, you just argue in bad faith and ignore half of what they write.

Nah, they're coming across a bit snobby to me as well.

Nope, no ignoring, just making my point, and to me, yes, they sound snobby.

nayrt but I agree with the above anon. You sound really defensive of fanfic to the point of it just not being a rational assessment of fanfic vs. published original fiction at large. No one on this community would ever argue that there aren't amazing, professional-level fanfics out there. Your arguments have consistently been "there ARE good fanfics" which isn't the issue at hand. Of course there are. We're fandom people, after all, no one thinks otherwise. But it's silly to claim that the pool of quality is identical for fanfiction and original works. That's absolutely untrue. Walk into a bookstore's fiction section and the works will be on average of significant higher quality than averages on a general fanfic archive.

I'm talking about stuff i read/would read.

I won't pick up a romance novel, or a spy thriller, or a 'i was sad and went to India to find myself, yay!' type book.

Of the things i *would* read - sci-fi, fantasy, historical, and classics, I would say that the percentage of yuck to really good is about the same. I've browsed and picked up and spot-read tons of books in bookstores and libraries. Most are just...okay. They don't grab me, the writing isn't particularly outstanding, and sometimes there are typos.

The original anon said that 'fanfic is not as good as profic, if you say so you're deluding yourself', and i do not agree with that *at all*.

Now i'm off to work.

"The original anon said that 'fanfic is not as good as profic, if you say so you're deluding yourself'"

No they didn't. They said "it's not better". Which is not anywhere near the same as "it's not as good as".

Considering your severely lacking reading comprehension ITT though, it's no wonder you think fanfic is so amazing.

"I enjoy fanfic, I write it myself, but I cannot take anyone who tries to claim that it's better than published writing seriously."

And i said i *disagree with that a lot*. Some fanfic *is better*. Which has been my point all along. Pardon me for not remembering their exact wording.

At least two people agreed exactly with what I said - how about run along and nag them? I'm so tired of stating my opinion and having certain anons act as if i stated it as 100 PERCENT FACT OMG OMG OMG!!

I have said repeatedly it's my opinion and i don't agree with the OP's opinion. Now please go harangue the people who agreed with me, m'kay? 'Cause seriously - wtf is your point, other than 'i don't agree with you' (which....was *my* original point).

Jayzus. Feel free to have the last word, I'm done.

da

so you can challenge other's points and that's fine? but god forbid others challenge you on yours? this is a discussion, if you didn't want people rebutting your statements then why did you bother commenting?
