Re: Fandom secrets you can't be bothered to make

Other fanfic writers are always telling me they can't control what their characters do. I cannot relate at all. My characters do what I decide they will do.

I mean... do they mean it literally or do they mean it in the way of, "I started a fic/story with X in mind and suddenly it ended up going in Y direction." because the latter has definitely happened to me.

ayrt Probably mostly they mean the latter, which has happened to me too, but they're always saying stuff like "I'm not in charge when I write. My characters are going to do whatever they want." And I just don't get it. Sure I might change a story but that's because I decide to change it, not because the characters live in my head and control my story.

I remember this being extremely common in fandom in the early aughts, and it was 100% the former. people decided to playfully teehee that if you didn't like a plot twist or the dialogue or the pairing it was the characters don't blame me I do what they want. if everyone in the fandom acted the same it was like we were all in on the same joke so it was an easy way to cover your ass and prevent flame attacks, but if it wasn't common around the fandom, people who did it came off as weird. either holier-than-thou (a lot of BNFs did it) or weirdly overinvested and soulbondery.

so basically instead of hiding your fic in a drawer for fear of doxxers coming for you, you could post it and claim innocence for anything objectionable done in the story, even if we all knew that innocence was fraud.

I admit I roll my eyes a little when people say this. I think it's an affectation more than anything else - writers love acting as though their creations are SO REAL YOU GUYS that they have minds of their own.

I do kind of get it, because I've had it happen to me where it feels they have a mind of your own, however it is most definitely possible to get them to do what you want/need them to do - it just takes a bit more effort.

I usually assume they're just being cute, like "I didn't make them kiss, they wanted to kiss, it's not my fault LOL!"
