Maybe watch the last episode of the season? Or at least get spoiled on how it ends because there's fallout. They embrace the cheesiness of the show after that. One of the character spend a good deal of season 2 grieving over what happened in season 1 and it was fantastic.

That the other thing is they don't shy away from their characters having to deal with trauma. There are emotional consequences and the characters don't always deal with those in healthy productive ways, but then have each other for support.

Please get past S1. Season 2 picks up and starts to hit it's stride and season 3 is just wonderful.
