*tilts head*

I'm still trying to figure out what this picture is. (The options get less and less savory.)

It's a crack pipe.

Do you actually know that your serious fic sucks though? Or maybe crack is just less stressful for you, so it's easier to write. If you put a lot of pressure on yourself to do it 'right' that could be stifling your creativity and skill.

I say relax and write what you want. But relaxing is the key part, either way. ;)

Came here to say this. I think "less stressful" and less demanding is the key.

I have it like that with smut and have eventually resigned to writing mostly smut. It is a bit irking, but I'm having fun with that so that's what it will be.

I mean, I'm sure pressure/stress is part of it. There are some parts in serious fic that don't necessarily suck, but overall, the sentences and descriptions are just... blah. I might have a nice twist going on, but it's full of "Timmy said this" and "Jenny did that," with the dialogue being way more interesting. I really have to force myself. No matter how much I tell myself "this is just an outline, I can go back and edit," I just can't make that healthy balance between dialogue and description happen. If it doesn't look obviously forced, then it's "oops, did I forget to mention there was this other thing happening while Timmy said this and Jenny did that."

In crackfic, Timmy could be hanging from the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in his polka-dot boxers declaring his love to his mentor, who doesn't date anybody in canon and has been dead for three years, while Jenny spontaneously combusts at the mention of the word "triumvirate." It doesn't make sense, but it's a way more interesting read.
