Does he have to be killed off, though? Can't they just say he transferred to a different ship or went to teach at Starfleet Academy or something?

MTE. I prefer that they do this, because I think it'd be too sad to have him die twice, if that makes sense.

I hope so. It feels like people just started writing Chekov-fics again, and if they kill him off I fear they might stop. :-(

I think JJ said the character would simply be 'retired' in that particular universe, so it's probably that there'll be a reference to Chekov being assigned to another ship or something like that.

I honestly don't know. It is so sad what happened to the actor. But honestly, he was one of the weakest casting decisions of the reboot movies to me. He did not feel like Chekov at all. Chekov and Scotty were the worst of the new movies for me.

He died in a tragic accident that involved him being pinned between his car and a pillar. He'd just gotten out of the car, and it rolled and trapped and killed him.

Being killed offscreen is more of a blessing to his character than anything the new series could ever write...
