Honestly, it’s just Watsonian vs Doylist with a social justice hat: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/WatsonianVersusDoylist Specifically, “Thermian” is the term a pro-SJ Doylist used to argue that Watsonians are ignorant for not caring about SJ. It’s meant to imply that Watsonians, like the Thermians in Galaxy Quest, don’t understand that fiction isn’t real. (A lot of fandom arguments are really just Watsonians and Doylists talking past each other.)

I guess I'm still a little confused, because I feel like that point could equally be made in support of or against either side of the argument...

Huh? But... usually the people who care too much about SJ-topics in a medium tend to be the ones coming off as people who can't distinguish between fiction and reality...
