133. SIGNED. I just don’t GET the insistence that subtitled works are better; if you’re a native speaker of English, frankly, they aren’t. So much is lost in translation in most of subtitled versions (not to mention the time it takes to read the things taking away from watching the action on the screen) kills a lot of the joy for me.

133. The problem is that you are never going to get the exact same feel of the translation, no matter how literal it is. If you don't translate it literally, you don't know exactly what they were saying in the original version but if you translate it too literally the translation isn't going to make sense. But I'd rather get a translation where cultural phrases and jokes are changed to fit the English version than get a translation with phrases and jokes that just don't work in English.

I didn't mean to suggest that preferring the dubs are better or worse than the subtitled versions; clearly it's an individual preference. Despite the fact that I'm half-Jap and was raised by my full-Japanese mother, I still don't get a lot of the cultural references in animanga, so to me the dubs make more sense.

On the other hand, the Japanese VA do tend to sound very charismatic to my ears, anyway. It takes a damn good English VA to sell me on a dub. Lately though, the Americans have worked a good deal harder on obtaining great VAs, which I've been very appreciative of.

XD Don't worry about it. I was just adding some thoughts to what you were saying (especially since I'm learning Spanish and still find it amusing when I tell Spanish people about the phrase "It's raining cats and dogs" because that phrase doesn't make sense to them and they find it very funny as a result).
