It's hard. It's a tough situation for the kid. There are also probably millions of kids in this country in objectively worse situations. It bothers me that we're sympathetic for this one kid because his parents are rich and we know his name because his parents are in movies. It's not anyone's fault, it's a flaw in the culture, but I am made very uncomfortable by it.

What you said is true - there are likely many, many kids in worse situations. But being sympathetic for this one doesn't take anything away from those children. Empathy isn't pie. We can be sympathetic for all children in similar situations, regardless of their economic background.

But we're not. In practice, we're absolutely not. Maybe you are, but as a society, we are not.

I get your point, but I still don't think it's a bad thing to feel empathy for a kid in a tough situation. It does say some not great things about celebrity culture and our obsession with it as a society, though.
